The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN = 584283). The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed. However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. BRIEF: Buried treasure and ghost slaves. SUMMARY: Ghost slaves roam the grounds, protecting buried treasure and the lands of this plantation. BRIEF: Organ music, flickering lights, but it's long abandoned SUMMARY: This church is thought to be haunted. The church now stands empty, but the sounds of organ music reportedly can still sometimes be heard coming from its long-empty depths. Lights turn on in the church and flicker, though there is no electricity in the building. People have reported seeing ghostly apparitions in and around the church. BRIEF: A nice place in the country that happens to be haunted. SUMMARY: Bowling Brook Inn was built in 1837 by Colonel Tom Hook. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. The house was later purchased in 1878 by Robert Wyndham Walden. Walden was a prosperous horse trainer. Walden trained five successive Preakness winners. The Inn sits on 225 acres and is located at 6000 Middleburg Road in Middleburg, between Gettysburg and Westminster. BRIEF: Old courthouse remains home to many ghosts SUMMARY: This 1887-era courthouse building in Mays Landing is haunted by numerous ghostly presences. These include the ghostly woman who is seen sobbing and a young ghostly child. The lights turn themselves on, and the sounds of jangling keys can be heard in the hallway. BRIEF: Patient beware. SUMMARY: This institution was founded in 1797, making it the second oldest insane asylum in the Nation. BRIEF: Heroine of John Greenleaf Whittier's poem from the Civil War. "Shoot if you must, this old gray head, but spare your country's flag" SUMMARY: The house is haunted by the spirit of Barbara Fritchie. BRIEF: Cross this bridge slowly. SUMMARY: Back in the early 1970's a young girl had a wild streak. Her name was Sally, and if you haven't heard of her you've probably heard of the bridge named for her tragedy.
Sally's father was a preacher who kept tight watch over her. The girl, of course, broke from her father's rules. She drank, smoked and ran with the boys. She fell in love with one very wild boy. The young girl became pregnant, but she was too afraid to tell her Dad.
The bridge is located on the line between Anne Arundel and Prince George counties.
Many years ago, a young unmarried teenaged girl became pregnant and had a baby. She was very afraid to tell her parents. The young girl took the baby and dropped it over the side of the Governor's Bridge. Shocked and overcome at what she had done, the girl then jumped off the bridge and was killed. BRIEF: At least two ghosts haunts these halls. SUMMARY: The college was chartered 1830. It opened 1832 in Boydton, Virginia and it moved in 1868.
The college was named after John Randolph and Nathaniel Macon. The school was originally for men and it became coeducational in 1971.
The college is known to be haunted. The Mary Branch girl's dormitory (of course!) has had many paranormal occurrences. The doors open and close by themselves. Students have had problems with items disappearing and reappearing. Along Laurel Bush road and Guyton road I have observed an old woman in a nice clean day dress and a big floppy bonnet like/gardening hat (1930's/40's style) walking a small clean white terrier dog. As I pass her she turns her back and looks down and picks her dog up always keeping her back to me passing in my truck. As I make the sharp curve to the left and turn around she is completely gone. BRIEF: Successor to Ford's Theatre SUMMARY: This structure was the successor to the Ford's Theatre facility. Opened in 1887, it was designed and built by John Shaw Billings to house the Army Medical Museum, the Library of the Surgeon General's Office, and some of the medical records. Between 1893 and 1910, it also housed the Army Medical School. BRIEF: Multigenerational Home of Todd family, involved in War of 1812. SUMMARY: Todd's House is known as Todd's Inheritance.
Thomas Todd settled there in 1664 with his wife and children from Gloucester County, Virginia. "There" was located between the tip of Edgemere's Miller's Island and the peninsula where Fort Howard sits. For over three centuries the descendants of the Todd family have lived in the home. That's as much prolonged, concentrated history as anyone in this country, except for of course the Indians. BRIEF: Long past winter, but still enjoying the greens SUMMARY: This golf course is haunted by the spirit of an angry Judge. He has been seen walking among the nearby tombstones and on the Green. BRIEF: Moving objects and an unsurpressable evil feeling abound in this shanty-turned residence. SUMMARY: In relating the most terrifying incident of several encounters in these mysterious, desolate hills just beyond Neshanic Station, D.S. Gibson contends that a place can be 'bad': "Yes, definitely." BRIEF: A squad of stainless steel figures, slightly larger than human scale SUMMARY: Representing a squad on patrol, the 19 stainless steel soldiers are slightly larger scale, about 1.2 times the size of an average human: 15 Army, 2 Marines, 1 Navy Medic and 1 Air Force Observer, armed, dressed in full gear and rain ponchos. Some appear very unhappy. One is definitely worried. Another looks bored. All are intense and impressive. They are placed in a 150-foot triangular formation with granite slabs, mulch and juniper bush terrain underfoot. Of note is the conspicuous sparseness of armament and gear; it's not just cloaked as even the rifles are dated. The aura is that, rather than being of advanced technology and weaponry, this was a war of superhuman effort. Exaggerated physical size lends to this. BRIEF: Numerous drownings in this lake have resulted in at least one haunting. SUMMARY: The lake is known to be haunted. People have reported seeing balls of light. People report that they have heard strange and eerie noises in the woods. The noises are often heard just inside the treeline along the water edge. People claim that you can still see bubbles rising to the surface of the water. BRIEF: A steep hill; a bad accident. SUMMARY: Black Rock Mill is reportedly haunted by two teenage ghosts who were killed when their car went out of control on the narrow and winding road that drops as it approaches the Black Rock Mill. Their ghostly apparitions and overturned car lights have been seen on dark nights.
If you honk your horn a few times the spirits are seen rising from the stream and then knock on your car door.
A pair of bright headlights have been seen coming down the narrow road and then disappear. BRIEF: "One worth checking" BRIEF: Sightings of a "witch ghost" in the cemetery; puts flowers on childrens' graves. SUMMARY: Sightings have been reported of a "witch ghost" who, late at night, glides through the cemetery putting flowers on childrens' graves. BRIEF: Several murders, unhappy energies. SUMMARY: The Starner Dam is reportedly haunted. People drowned in the river at its location before the dam was built. People have committed suicide there, and people have dumped murdered bodies here. One murder victim's body was found as recently as 18 February 1993. His body was in the snow-covered fishing area near Starner's Dam. The autopsy revealed that he had been shot twice in the head by a gun that was fired while held against his head. The police discovered that his wife had him murdered by her lover.
