SUMMARY: The erection of the Courthouse of Caroline County was started in 1801 and finished in 1807 by the executors of George Hoomes' estate. So far as is known there was only one other courthouse building prior to the one now in use, and it stood about two miles northeast of Bowling Green. The present building stands in practically the geographical center of the County of land which was once a part of the Bowling Green estate of the Hoomes family. The manor house still standing on the southern outskirts of the town is now called the Old Mansion, and on its property were the race course, the Bowling Green, and the New Hope Tavern. There is much deep history intertwined with this place.

SUMMARY: Morrill Hall is the oldest building on campus. You know it's seen its share of activity. It is widely thought to be haunted. The building was used for medical training more than 80 years ago. UMCP kept cadavers for dissection in the basement [see Frank the gravedigger].

SUMMARY: Located overlooking the Antietam battlefield is the Phillip Pry House, which is a brick farmhouse. The farmhouse was commandeered by Union General George McClellan. He used it as his headquarters during the battle. General Israel B. Richardson received wounds in this battle, which he would die from 6 months later. The house is now owned by the National Park Service and closed to visitors.

SUMMARY: This building was constructed in the 1790's. A brick addition was constructed in the early 1800's.

SUMMARY: It is said there are over 30 spirits haunting this place. There are voices heard in the main lobby of men, women, and children that were brutally murdered by a man who went insane inside the hotel.

SUMMARY: Two ghosts haunt this firehouse. One ghost has been seen in the engineer's room. This ghost appears to be evil. He appears as a shadow in the doorway. He has been seen in the hallway going to the engineer's room.

SUMMARY: This is a story of a haunted road. A weary looking old woman has been seen walking down MacArthur Boulevard near Seven Locks Road late on stormy nights --her faint apparition appears glistening in the dew and saturated air.

SUMMARY: Nancy Goodier's home dates back to 1812. People say the home is haunted by a Confederate soldier. Her husband has seen the ghost which appears to be searching for something. The ghostly apparition is a bearded man dressed in Confederate officer's uniform. He is wearing a hat with plumage and he has spurs on his riding boots. The ghost has been seen at the bottom of the stairs, looking upward.

SUMMARY: Built in 1888 by African American proprietor Thomas S. Lovett, the hotel, built on a hilltop provides a splendid view of Harpers Ferry, WV and the Potomac river. The hotel, which still hosts guests even today has a long history including some tragedy events. Employees and guest alike have experienced the paranormal within the confines of this aging hotel. UPDATE: The Hilltop House Hotel will be closing in February 2008 for substantial renovations at the direction of the hotel's new owners. Currently the hotel is scheduled to re-open sometime in 2010.

SUMMARY: A mysterious black-clad stranger makes a yearly pilgrimage to the grave of Edgar Allan Poe, leaving behind three red roses and a bottle of French cognac.

SUMMARY: The William W. Early house is an elegant high-style frame dwelling in the Queen Anne style. It was built at the end of the Victorian period, by a successful and prominent businessman, in a conscious attempt to utilize the best features of a style which was already on the decline. The house resembles several plans available through mail-order pattern books in the 1890's, but the exact pattern has not been identified. In any case, the house is one of the best examples of its type in Prince George's County.

SUMMARY: With a long history, several owners and purposes, this building, now an inn, is sure to be haunted.

SUMMARY: Whitish shapes have been observed in an upstairs bathroom. Also, doorknocks on one of the upstairs bedrooms have been reported when there was no one around to be doing the knocking. The house is a private residence.

SUMMARY: A ghostly woman haunts the Treasury Annex. She is seen wearing a long white dress. She has been seen walking on the second floor of the Treasury Annex. Workers in the building have heard her footsteps. Ghostly voices have been heard, and the ghost occasionally flushes the toilet. This happens after normal work hours when the building is supposed to be empty.

SUMMARY: The Mount Wilson Hospital opened in 1925. The hospital provided services for geriatric and mentally retarded individuals after the number of tuberculosis cases in this area declined. Thousands of TB patients had been treated at this facility, though no definite records remain. The hospital's name was formally changed to the Thomas Wilson Center in 1981, and the inpatient treatment ceased operations then.

SUMMARY: A runaway girl was taken into the woods by an evil man and killed back in the 1970's. That man was never caught.

SUMMARY: This church was built around 1850 and immediately became part of the Underground Railroad. Runaway slaves were hidden in the belfry. Sometimes slaves would jump onto railroad trains when the train slowed down around nearby bends.

SUMMARY: People have seen a tombstone in Rocky Hill Cemetery that appears to bleed. The woman buried beneath the tombstone told her husband if he remarries and if his new wife was cruel to her children her tombstone would bleed in sympathy for her children. They have changed the tombstone several times but the blood keeps coming back.

SUMMARY: Pierce Hall is located on Alumni Quad. The building is known to be haunted by the ghostly spirit of a woman. Nobody has been able to identify the woman or understand why she walks the halls late at night. Many students have seen this ghostly apparition. She is seen all year round endlessly walking the halls.

SUMMARY: Just stumbled across this. Not a haunting, but spooky anyway. Why is googling erasing the existence of government energy facilities from its maps? The DOE in Germantown, MD has no property listing, and its road names don't exist on google maps. That's not just taxation without representation, that's taxation without existence.
