BRIEF: The Courthouse Square office building was built on the site of the old county jail, which was used from the early 1900's until the 1960's. In the early 1900's the building was the location of several executions by hanging. Several hauntings seemingly accompany this fact. BRIEF: Death and drowning... SUMMARY: The Loy's Station covered bridge was built around 1860 by the Loy family. The family owned the feed mill and post office at Loy's Station, which was a small community with a railroad station.
The original bridge was modified in 1929. New steel beams were installed to replace the original wooden beams and the lateral bracing under the wooden floor. The bridge was destroyed by arson in 1991. Volunteers restored the bridge using timbers salvaged from the old bridge.
During the Civil War the Union and Confederate Armies marched through Frederick and Thurmont on their way to Gettysburg and Antietam. Many small skirmishes took place around Frederick and Thurmont. The soldiers often camped near covered bridges for protective cover and usually water for their horses.
The covered bridges are reportedly haunted by the soldiers who died there and by people that drowned in the water below.
