BRIEF: A saint's bones and exquisite sculpture mark this landmark church. SUMMARY: Mary's Garden in Annapolis, Maryland, is located behind St. Mary's Church, in the quadrangle formed by the church, the rectory and the historic John Carroll House. St. Mary's Church, on narrow Duke of Gloucester Street in the heart of old Annapolis, stands on the site of the first public Catholic chapel of grandeur in Maryland, built in 1822 by Charles Carroll. (Remember, Catholic churches in Maryland were actually outlawed and burned sometime after 1658; many landowners, however, privately maintained their own secret chapels on their own land.) BRIEF: Quite large, rumored to be haunted abandoned tuberculosis hospital, decaying in the middle of the woods behind a suburban neighborhood. SUMMARY: A delighfully creepy abandoned hospital, going to ruin in the woods.
