The house has been owned by several different families. BRIEF: Apparition of Dangerfield Newby still wonders Hog Alley SUMMARY: The first man to be killed in John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry was a free black man named Dangerfield Newby. He was killed by a spike being driven through his throat. He joined Brown's army in hopes of freeing his family from bondage in Virginia. His ghost is still seen walking down Hog Alley. He is dressed in baggy trousers and an old hat, and he has a terrible scar running down his throat. |
