"Death is the great Teacher, stern, cold, inexorable, irresistible; whom the collected might of the world cannot stay or ward off. The breath, that parting from the lips of King or beggar, scarcely stirs the hushed air, cannot be bought, or brought back for a moment, with the wealth of Empires. What a lesson is this, teaching our frailty and feebleness, and an Infinite Power beyond us! It is a fearful lesson, that never becomes familiar. It walks through the earth in dread mystery, and lays it hands upon all. It is a universal lesson, that is read everywhere and by all men. Its message comes every year and every day. The past years are crowded with its sad and solemn mementoes; and death's finger traces its handwriting upon the walls of every human habitation." --Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma

BRIEF: Rumor of a haunting in a castle built on the side of Warm Springs Ridge overlooking Berkeley Springs WV SUMMARY: The castle was built by wealthy Maryland businessman Samuel Taylor Suit for his young bride, Rosa, in 1885. Rosa spent the family silver on throwing lavish parties and died in poverty. It is thought her spirit still lurks in the castle, a faded shell of its former grandeur.
… BRIEF: Seven protective brothers; a gypsy and death. SUMMARY: A gypsy ghost haunts this drawbridge. According to the local legend, a apparition of a white stallion can be seen galloping on the roads. The horse is ridden by a gypsy man and his lover. BRIEF: Just a hill in the woods. SUMMARY: Green Mountain in Cheverly, not too far from the Prince Georges hospital. It was rumored to be the camp site for the British troops that marched through Bladensburg and later on into DC. BRIEF: Fame and history have left a drumming legacy SUMMARY: The Berkeley Plantation dates all the way to 1619. Thirty-eight settlers from Berkeley Castle in England were the founders of the plantation and surrounding lands.
Benjamin Harrison built the mansion house in 1726. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were among its notable guests.
General McCellan's Federal Troops took over Berkeley plantation during the Civil War during a retreat from Richmond. John Jamieson purchased the plantation after the war. Jamieson had served as a drummer boy for McCellan. His son Malcolm inherited the estate in 1927.
The plantation is still owned by the Jamieson family.
