Loys Station Covered Bridge

BRIEF: Death and drowning...

SUMMARY: The Loy's Station covered bridge was built around 1860 by the Loy family. The family owned the feed mill and post office at Loy's Station, which was a small community with a railroad station. The original bridge was modified in 1929. New steel beams were installed to replace the original wooden beams and the lateral bracing under the wooden floor. The bridge was destroyed by arson in 1991. Volunteers restored the bridge using timbers salvaged from the old bridge. During the Civil War the Union and Confederate Armies marched through Frederick and Thurmont on their way to Gettysburg and Antietam. Many small skirmishes took place around Frederick and Thurmont. The soldiers often camped near covered bridges for protective cover and usually water for their horses. The covered bridges are reportedly haunted by the soldiers who died there and by people that drowned in the water below. The bridge is located on Old Frederick Road, in Creagerstown.

Stonewall Cemetery

BRIEF: Creepy Cemetery in the middle of nowhere.

SUMMARY: Although I have never seen anything, the vibes are creeeeeepy. There is a grave of 10 year old girl who's epitaph ends with the words "prepare for death and follow me". Gives me the wiggins' but doesn't feel evil. Cool place.

Werewolf of Varina

BRIEF: It roams

SUMMARY: People have seen a werewolf roaming around Varina. It has reportedly been seen in the Confederate Hills Recreation Center during the full moon. Reports include howling and a probability of giving chase; beware.

La Vale Toll Gate House

La Vale, Allegany County, Maryland
AKA: La Vale Toll House

BRIEF: The first Toll Gate House on the National Road

SUMMARY: The Cumberland or National Road was constructed, using federal funds, to link Cumberland, Maryland, with the Ohio River (1811-1818). It became the principal transportation artery to the trans-Appalachian West. Ownership of the road was turned over to the individual states, and shortly after accepting its portion, Maryland's legislature established a rate schedule and began building toll-houses. The La Vale Toll Gate House was the first such structure to be erected.

Crampton Gap Battle

BRIEF: Many soldiers died here.

SUMMARY: The Crampton Gap is an area in Frederick County were many soldiers were killed in battle during the Civil War on September 14, 1862. There were so many dead and decomposing bodies that surviving soldiers could not bury them all. Women and children of the town helped bury the dead, who were most often buried right where they had fallen in rather shallow graves.

"When you get old, the only things you remember are the things you dared to do and the things you didn't dare to do. All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." --P.J.
