Adventure • Intrigue

Psy-ops "combined to redefine the parameters of acceptable discourse in America. Principal among the notions placed beyond the Pale was the practice and theory of "conspiracism" -- which soon came to include criticism of mainstream reportage. More than a matter of seeing cabals behind every murder, it was a way of thinking, a stance toward the networks, the press and the feds. Anyone who looked too deeply into events, or who asked too many questions, was dismissed as "a conspiracy theorist." (This, after MK-ULTRA, Iran-Contra, BCCI, and the destruction of the World Trade Centers.) In some ways, it is as if the century itself has been encrypted, so that if an historian would be honest, he must also become an investigative reporter. Failing that, we are left at the mercy of ambitious academicians and journalists, stenographers to power who are themselves complicit in an astonishing string of cover-ups and atrocities that stretch from Dealy Plaza to Watergate, Waco to 9/11." --Peter Levenda

Crain House

Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County, Maryland
AKA: Smith-Stoll House

BRIEF: This old house.

SUMMARY: The house is located off of Crain Highway, and that why it was called the Crain House. The house is a historical house that goes back to the days when Glen Burnie has big furnaces that we were used in manufacturing. The house has been abandon for many years. The house is very old from the 1800's and dates back to the Civil War era. The house was once a beautiful farmhouse. The house is on the Maryland Historic Properties listing, and was listed in the 1970's. The house is named after a former school teacher who once lived in the house.

Deep Creek Lake

BRIEF: Beware of thin Ice

SUMMARY: Deep Creek Lake is one of Maryland’s popular winter resorts, located in the mountains of Garret County. Due to its northern climate and altitude, the temperatures can drop to the extremes. In the winter months, usually from December to mid-March, the lake is covered with beautiful sheet of ice. Vacationers and tourists enjoy snowmobiling in this winter wonderland, and sometimes venture out on the seemingly frozen solid lake. Ice can be deceptive in appearance. Water doesn’t always freeze evenly across the lake--where it may be thick and sturdy in one spot, it can be just as thin and brittle in another; breaking under the slightest pressure. At least once a year, someone tempts the thin ice, only to fall into the chilly water below.

Herr Tavern and Publick House

BRIEF: Original 1815 Tavern on Herr's Ridge one mile west of town. Property and building were used in part of the 1st day of the Gettysburg Battle

SUMMARY: Thomas Sweeney built a tavern and publick house on the site in 1815. In 1828 the establishment was sold to Frederick Herr, and the business was run by the Herr family for almost 40 years, and sometime during this time the house was a stop on the underground railroad. The ridge the house stands on came to be known as Herr's Ridge, and the battle of Gettysburg began in the fields around the tavern buildings. The Publick House was used as the first Confederate hospital during the battle, and much of the house was converted into operating rooms. After the war, it became a boardinghouse, then an operating farm, and then rental property. Then in 1977 Steven Wolf bought the house, researched the history, and restored it to its original purpose, opening for business in May of 1978. Today the house, which is on the register of historic places, has been faithfully restored to its 19th century appearance.

"When you get old, the only things you remember are the things you dared to do and the things you didn't dare to do. All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." --P.J.
