"Death is the great Teacher, stern, cold, inexorable, irresistible; whom the collected might of the world cannot stay or ward off. The breath, that parting from the lips of King or beggar, scarcely stirs the hushed air, cannot be bought, or brought back for a moment, with the wealth of Empires. What a lesson is this, teaching our frailty and feebleness, and an Infinite Power beyond us! It is a fearful lesson, that never becomes familiar. It walks through the earth in dread mystery, and lays it hands upon all. It is a universal lesson, that is read everywhere and by all men. Its message comes every year and every day. The past years are crowded with its sad and solemn mementoes; and death's finger traces its handwriting upon the walls of every human habitation." --Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma
Haunts Database
BRIEF: Haunted Bed & Breakfast in Bentonsport, IA SUMMARY: Built in 1846, and originally called the Ashland House, the property was owned by William Robinson. The Ashland House was built as a hotel for steamboat travelers on the Des Moines river by Morman craftsmen. In 1857 the house was purchased by Lewis Mason and changed its name to the Phoenix Hotel, but was known locally as the Mason House. The house served as a temporary hospital for injured Civil War soldiers and was also part of the Underground Railroad. The house and its grounds are said to be haunted by the spirits of slaves that died before reaching freedom and the soldiers who's lives were claimed while the house was a hospital. BRIEF: "This place gives me the creeps!" Vincent Price, 1977 SUMMARY: Edgar Allan Poe's house is haunted by a heavyset female spirit dressed in gray who has been seen by staff and visitors. BRIEF: The Historic Hilltop House Hotel in Harpers Ferry includes some unusual guests SUMMARY: Built in 1888 by African American proprietor Thomas S. Lovett, the hotel, built on a hilltop provides a splendid view of Harpers Ferry, WV and the Potomac river. The hotel, which still hosts guests even today has a long history including some tragedy events. Employees and guest alike have experienced the paranormal within the confines of this aging hotel.
UPDATE: The Hilltop House Hotel closed in February 2008 for substantial renovations at the direction of the hotel's new owners. Currently the hotel is scheduled to re-open sometime in 2010. BRIEF: It's said that a woman killed herself in the middle room of the Yellow House Hotel Inn and Restaurant. SUMMARY: It's said that a woman killed herself in the middle room of the Yellow House Hotel Inn and Restaurant. People have spotted her in the middle window; people who stay in that particular room sometimes later claim to have seen the woman. BRIEF: Long history, various hauntings. SUMMARY: Voodoo, old coinage, and a history that predates the Declaration of Independence by more than a century. BRIEF: Up to 70 unmarked graves of Civil War soldiers and others SUMMARY: Eyewitness reports describe graves in the vicinity, most lost to time, neglect and development. Reported residual energy manifestations include shadows, moans and "dreadful" feelings. BRIEF: Mary Caitrin Mahoney, White House intern, executed. SUMMARY: For those not from around DC, it is partly a spoke-and-wheel design, with long roads emanating from DC and sometimes extending for miles. One such road is Maryland Route 355, which is colloquially known as Frederick Road, Urbana Pike, Rockville Pike, "The Pike," Hungerford Drive, Wisconsin Avenue, and just plain old three-fifty-five. It's an old road that goes from the very heart of Georgetown (the terminus of the C&O Canal) in Washington, DC all the way north to Frederick, Maryland.
Over the years, many strange things have happened along this road and nearby to either side. Probably countless strange things. But the strangest thing occured in hot July, 1997 and it involved a pretty, 25-year-old White House intern named Mary Caitrin Mahoney who was working at the Georgetown Starbucks coffee shop late one night. Attackers broke in, stole nothing, but reportedly shot Mary, laying face-down, in the back of the head five times at close range. Two other employees were killed in a similar execution style. Some dupe was caught and confessed, but many believe the story does not add up; including the fact that Mary was a White House intern in the Clinton Administration.
