BRIEF: This is the oldest stone cutting mill in the country SUMMARY: Aside from the obvious ghost stories associated with the men who perished while carving out, hewing and working stone from the Seneca Rock Quarry --thus providing the hallmark redstone that was used in famous buildings in Washington, D.C., including the Smithsonian Castle-- there is a lesser known source of ghostiness in this quiet part of Seneca. BRIEF: Very old cemetery dating from the Civil War era SUMMARY: A year or two ago a beloved neighborhood, part-time cop was run over and killed at the intersection of Wisconsin and M Street in Georgetown. He was also the caretaker for Oak Hill Cemetery. BRIEF: Death and drowning... SUMMARY: The Loy's Station covered bridge was built around 1860 by the Loy family. The family owned the feed mill and post office at Loy's Station, which was a small community with a railroad station.
The original bridge was modified in 1929. New steel beams were installed to replace the original wooden beams and the lateral bracing under the wooden floor. The bridge was destroyed by arson in 1991. Volunteers restored the bridge using timbers salvaged from the old bridge.
During the Civil War the Union and Confederate Armies marched through Frederick and Thurmont on their way to Gettysburg and Antietam. Many small skirmishes took place around Frederick and Thurmont. The soldiers often camped near covered bridges for protective cover and usually water for their horses.
The covered bridges are reportedly haunted by the soldiers who died there and by people that drowned in the water below.
The bridge was built in 1880 and it located on Old Frederick Road, in Creagerstown. BRIEF: The butler did it SUMMARY: Legend tells that the Sprague Mansion is haunted. Amasa Sprague traveled one day in December 1843 to nearby Johnston. The next morning, his bludgeoned body was found beside the road, almost within sight of his mansion. A man suspected of the murder was tried and hanged, but evidence later proved his innocence. That Mr. John Gordon was the last person executed in Rhode Island, as public indignation led to legislation abolishing capital punishment there. The actual killer was never found. BRIEF: Possibly a family haunting? SUMMARY: Faces have been seen around house and inside house. Various ghostly activities have occured. BRIEF: Was the CIA involved? SUMMARY: This ghost likes to open the file cabinets in this room, turn doorknobs and make walking sounds. He doesn't mind doing this in front of people. The ghost also likes to ride the elevator. The Medix School has now moved down the street, the hotel was torn down and a new business has gone up in its place. The teachers of the Medix School wonder if the ghost is now haunting the new business.
