"The power process is disrupted in our society through a deficiency of real goals and a deficiency of autonomy in pursuit of goals. But it is also disrupted because of those human drives that fall into group 3: the drives that one cannot adequately satisfy no matter how much effort one makes. One of these drives is the need for security. Our lives depend on decisions made by other people; we have no control over these decisions and usually we do not even know the people who make them. ("We live in a world in which relatively few people—maybe 500 or 1,000—make the important decisions"—Philip B. Heymann of Harvard Law School, quoted by Anthony Lewis, New York Times, April 21, 1995.) Our lives depend on whether safety standards at a nuclear power plant are properly maintained; on how much pesticide is allowed to get into our food or how much pollution into our air; on how skillful (or incompetent) our doctor is; whether we lose or get a job may depend on decisions made by government economists or corporation executives; and so forth. Most individuals are not in a position to secure themselves against these threats to more than a very limited extent. The individual's search for security is therefore frustrated, which leads to a sense of powerlessness." -- UNABomber's Manifesto, paragraph 67
4 years, 2 months, 13 days, 8 hours, 35 minutes, 30 seconds until the Mayan end of Age. December 21 2012 (11:11am GMT). The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN = 584283). The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed. However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. The 2012 Winter Solstice will also occur on this day at 11:11 UTC. --wikipedia . All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." --P.J. "We foster an environment of constructive peer review, the philosophy being the more active members out there thinking, observing and collecting evidence, the more likely someone is to produce something substantial and the more we all collectively learn. Another way to look at it: Every family has an eccentric member or two; we're the place where all those folks can collectively hang out and feel at home."
BRIEF: A housekeeping ghost. SUMMARY: The Weaver-Fox House was built in 1874-75. The Clayton family moved into the Weaver-Fox house and soon discovered that they were not alone. After only a few weeks, they decided to take a trip. In preparation, they went through the house locking windows and closing all the doors to the rooms. When the couple returned home they were surprised to find all the doors open in every room. They found a pile of unused towels laying on their bed. They could not figure it out and decided to just let the matter go. BRIEF: Don't mess with the Indian spirits. SUMMARY: "No one liked to go into the woods behind the station because they felt very uncomfortable, as if they were being watched." BRIEF: This one will getcha. Senate side is to the left (north); House of Representatives to the right (south), when viewing the building from its "front": i.e., its west-side that faces The Mall, The Washington Monument, The Reflecting Pool and The Lincoln Monument. One-block to the east is the Supreme Court. BRIEF: Small massacre; long memory SUMMARY: 1746 ten school children and the teacher were savagely masscred by a group of natives.
Archie was the lone survivor who, after he was scalped, made it to a nearby river and tried to wash the blood from his face. The dead were all buried in a mass grave on the site now marked by a monument. BRIEF: Soldiers stick around SUMMARY: This building, used during the Civil War, is where the soldiers came to collect their pension. The old building is thought to be haunted by ghostly soldiers. Soldiers have been seen arriving "mounted, on horseback" to the building. The building's designer, Montgomery Meigs, also haunts the building. His face has been seen at the top of the marble columns in the building's great hall. Odd noises are often heard at any time of day. BRIEF: Various activity still haunts this old property SUMMARY: This home was built in 1820 by Joseph Kemp. The home is now an inn. That mansion, the Ammen Institute, was owned by a Catholic organization from about 1900. It reportedly "looks like a place that should be haunted."
