14th International Conference on Condensed Matter Nuclear Science

  with Potomac Sustainable Communities Initiative
Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, Washington D.C., August 10-15, 2008

In 1989, two chemists announced that they produced nuclear reactions and thermal energy under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure using electrochemistry. They were Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons. The reactions were termed "cold fusion," even though no one really knew then with confidence that nuclear reactions were occurring. Their novel experimental results were at odds with hot fusion data and were not supported by theory. Condensed Matter Nuclear Science, originally known as cold fusion, has been studied by thousands of scientists globally since the field began in 1989. The experimental evidence for the ability to induce nuclear reactions at low energies and temperatures is very strong although the mechanisms for the nuclear reactions are not yet understood.

The purpose of this scientific conference is to present and discuss new results on low energy nuclear reactions (LENR), which originally went by the name "cold fusion." The production of unexpectedly large amounts of excess heat in metals heavily loaded with hydrogen is also called the Fleischmann-Pons Effect.

Widgets & Stuff

EastGhost Postcards.

Spread the word.

The Daily Haunting is a "myspace widget" that can be easily embedded into any webpage using basic HTML. It's a standard jpeg that displays a random haunting, 320pixels wide by 200pixels tall. Nothing could be easier.

"EastGhost Haunts" is another widget that randomly displays pictures; 400pixels wide, 300pixels tall.

Random Haunts

Black Aggie

BRIEF: Illegitimate stone doppleganger

SUMMARY: Little is as eerie as the baleful stare of a piece of graveyard statuary, especially the ominous monolith "Grief" in DC's Rock Creek cemetery, whose illegitimate but infamous doppleganger, "Black Aggie," was once in Pikesville's Druid Ridge Cemetery near Baltimore but now haunts the Dolly Madison house near the Federal Court in DC. (Dolly Madison house was used by president James Madison & wife Dolly after White House was burned.)

Spring Valley Neighborhood

BRIEF: A different kind of poltergeist

SUMMARY: In the northwest corner of the District of Columbia, sandwiched between the Potomac River and the Maryland state line, is an affluent enclave of elegant homes and tree-lined streets known as Spring Valley. This neighborhood is home to some 13,000 people, including members of Washington's political and financial elite. The 660-acre community includes approximately 1,200 houses valued at between $600,000 and $1 million, along with the campus of American University, schools, churches, a hospital, foreign embassies, and a theological seminary. Beyond its reputation as a quiet, upscale neighborhood, Spring Valley has a less desirable attribute: It is the only residential area in the United States where a major chemical weapons cleanup operation is under way.

Smallwood House

Charles County, Maryland
FKA: Mattawoman Plantation

BRIEF: The Major General from Maryland

SUMMARY: The Smallwood House was built in 1760 by General William Smallwood. William Smallwood was born in 1732, he was born into a wealthy family who were active in Maryland politics. His father, Bayne Smallwood, was a Charles County delegate to the Maryland Assembly. He was also a justice of the Charles County Court.

Lums Pond State Park

BRIEF: An unsolved murder, 1970's style

SUMMARY: A runaway girl was taken into the woods by an evil man and killed back in the 1970's. That man was never caught.

Ketchikan High School

BRIEF: In 1946 a student fell from a catwalk to his death.

SUMMARY: In 1946 a student fell from a catwalk to his death. He haunts the theatre to this day, with crying and other noise, he is visible from the stage if you look up.

Rockville Flash Fire

BRIEF: An accident badly burns three men and kills one.

SUMMARY: Back in the early 1980's, during construction of what is now a quite popular restaurant, 3 steamfitters were involved in a movie-like, fiery explosion. The restaurant features natural gas lamps inside. The men were working on installing the lamps, and apparently an electrical spark inadvertently ignited what became a small, intensely hot fireball.

Christiana Fire Company Station 3

BRIEF: Good and evil at work

SUMMARY: Two ghosts haunt this firehouse. One ghost has been seen in the engineer's room. This ghost appears to be evil. He appears as a shadow in the doorway. He has been seen in the hallway going to the engineer's room.

Civil War Wax Museum

Adams County, Pennsylvania
Part of: Gettsburg National Battlefield

BRIEF: Several exhibits reportedly often reveal orbs when photographed.

SUMMARY: Several exhibits reportedly often reveal orbs when photographed.

Charlestown Junior High School

BRIEF: Interesting times

SUMMARY: Allegedly, a former janitor's footsteps can be heard going down to the boiler room. The sounds of a young student who died on school grounds can be heard laughing and running down hallways.

Potomac Valley Lodge

BRIEF: A frightening place indeed

SUMMARY: The Potomac Valley Lodge is located on Willard Road in Poolesville. This club has had some very strange things happen there. The former bartender hung himself in a closet years ago. A lady dropped dead in the ballroom on Halloween. A child drowned in the pool. See.

Waters Brick House Cemetery

Montgomery County, Maryland
AKA: William Waters, Jr. House Site, Horace Waters House

Washington Hotel

BRIEF: Hotel which dates to the 18th Century is haunted by those who once graced it's rooms

SUMMARY: The hotel dates back to the Revolutionary War days. The Hotel is reportedly haunted by figure from it passed. People have heard strange noises and voices, and have seen ghostly apparition wearing period clothing.

Ninth Court

BRIEF: Dark figure seen in living room

SUMMARY: Apparition of dark female figure seen moving across dining room into wall on east side.

Rangers Cabin at Redden State Forest

BRIEF: Paranormal events surround this rangers cabin

SUMMARY: The ranger's cabin in Redden State Forest is located in a barren section of the forest, and the area is haunted by the ghost of a woman who died there many years ago. The cabin was built at the turn of the century, and the house was taken over by the state when the land became a park in the 1930s.

Ward Family Cemetery

Montgomery County, Maryland
AKA: George H.M. Bennett Cemetery

Hannah More School

BRIEF: Mentions of a "Gray Lady" have been found in yearbooks dating back to 1909.

SUMMARY: Employees report an uncommon warm third floor and varied instances of moving objects. Mentions of a "Gray Lady" have been found in yearbooks dating back to 1909.

Dan's Rock

SUMMARY: An evil rumor. A wild misunderstanding. Several unecessary deaths. An unending tale. A whistling ghost.

Mt. Patuxent Cemetery

Montgomery County, Maryland
AKA: Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery

Glen Echo Trolley Park

Montgomery County, Maryland
AKA: Clara Barton House (nearby)

BRIEF: A fanciful theme park and a famously helpful neighbor

SUMMARY: People say that the old Glen Echo Trolley Park is haunted, right along with its nearby neighbor, the famous Clara Barton House.

Bladensburg Tavern

Prince Georges County, Maryland
AKA: George Washington House Tavern
FKA: Indian Maid Tavern
AFKA: Indian Queen Tavern

BRIEF: Gathering places often remain focal points; this one is no different

SUMMARY: The General Assembly of Maryland in 1742 passed an act for erecting a town on the South Side of the Eastern Branch of the Potowmack River. The town that they started was called Blandensburg, named after Thomas Bladen. He was the provincial governor in 1742.

Bay Oaks Neighborhood

BRIEF: A slaughter here long ago left poltergeists

SUMMARY: Bay Oak, the new housing development in Lewes, is at the same location where American Indians massacred members of a then-newly settled Dutch community. The neighborhood appears to be haunted. People have seen orbs floating in the air; streaks of light flash through the sky and inside their homes. Not one, not a few, but over one dozen.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church

BRIEF: A wonderful old church, now a private residence

"Surveys, such as the one conducted in 1996 by Gallup of a nationally representative sample of Americans, continue to show a high degree of belief, interest and involvement in a variety of paranormal and religious related phenomena among the general population. For example, 48 percent believed in the possibility of extra-sensory perception (ESP), 45 percent believe that unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have already visited Earth, and 56 and 72 per cent believed in the reality of the devil and angels, respectively (Gallup, 1997). In fact, these numbers have actually gone up since the surveys first started (Gallup and Newport, 1991) and other surveys amongst university and college students have yielded similar results (e.g. Messer and Griggs, 1989). Perhaps due to the widespread existence of such beliefs, the investigation of personality correlates of paranormal and particularly religious belief has received considerable attention in recent years, but little attention was given to both simultaneously." --Chris Huntley, 2005 Ph.D. thesis, Correlation of Paranormal Beliefs, Religious Beliefs and Personality

4 years, 5 months, 14 days, 7 hours, 57 minutes, 10 seconds until the Mayan end of Age.

It's true. The Martians have landed.

"When you get old, the only things you remember are the things you dared to do and the things you didn't dare to do. All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." (P.J. Gaenir's grandfather)   Dare! Chance favors the bold.
