14th International Conference on Condensed Matter Nuclear Science

  with Potomac Sustainable Communities Initiative
Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, Washington D.C., August 10-15, 2008

In 1989, two chemists announced that they produced nuclear reactions and thermal energy under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure using electrochemistry. They were Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons. The reactions were termed "cold fusion," even though no one really knew then with confidence that nuclear reactions were occurring. Their novel experimental results were at odds with hot fusion data and were not supported by theory. Condensed Matter Nuclear Science, originally known as cold fusion, has been studied by thousands of scientists globally since the field began in 1989. The experimental evidence for the ability to induce nuclear reactions at low energies and temperatures is very strong although the mechanisms for the nuclear reactions are not yet understood.

The purpose of this scientific conference is to present and discuss new results on low energy nuclear reactions (LENR), which originally went by the name "cold fusion." The production of unexpectedly large amounts of excess heat in metals heavily loaded with hydrogen is also called the Fleischmann-Pons Effect.

EastGhost Postcards.

Spread the word.

The Daily Haunting is a "myspace widget" that can be easily embedded into any webpage using basic HTML. It's a standard jpeg that displays a random haunting, 320pixels wide by 200pixels tall. Nothing could be easier.

"EastGhost Haunts" is another widget that randomly displays pictures; 400pixels wide, 300pixels tall.

Random Haunts

Rock Creek Cemetery

BRIEF: The largest and most ornate of DC's cemeteries, also the home of Grief

SUMMARY: A ghostly woman haunts the cemetery. She has been seen standing next to the statue known as "Grief" with her hand on its hand. This is said to be the apparition of Marian Hooper ("Clover") Adams, wife of Henry Adams (grandson of President Adams), who poisoned herself with potassium cyanide soon after her father's death. It was reportedly for her that the ominous statue nicknamed "Grief" was commissioned.

Library of Congress

BRIEF: Mysteries figures and banging are among the haunts in this old place

SUMMARY: The Library of Congress has its share of ghost stories. The building is haunted by a ghostly police officer who resides in the stacks. He has been seen wearing both his uniform and his casual clothes. He has even helped people exit the stacks when they have become lost in the miles and miles of books. He was a Sargent who died a number of years ago.

Ammendale Normal Institute

Prince Georges County, Maryland
AKA: Christian Brothers; Ammen Institute; Amen Institute

BRIEF: "...a retirement home for old and dying priests."

SUMMARY: Some local residents in and around Beltsville, Maryland have reported seeing mysterious spirits of cloaked monks in and around an old mansion. That mansion, the Ammen Institute, was owned by a Catholic organization from about 1900. It reportedly "looks like a place that should be haunted."

Kelly Building (MD Pharmacists Assoc.)

BRIEF: Slamming door sends chills.

SUMMARY: I worked in this building for over eight years and had some ghostly experiences.

Point Lookout

BRIEF: A mightily haunted place

SUMMARY: The Point Lookout State Park is located on a peninsula at the juncture of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. There have been many ghost stories and ghost sightings at Point Lookout. Park rangers have told first-hand stories about their experiences.

Ivanhoe

BRIEF: Ghostly evidence and poltergeists.

SUMMARY: The ghostly apparition of a woman dressed in lavender has been seen in the house. The woman was buried in what is now an ivy-covered grave in the old family graveyard. The woman was the wife of the original owner. A peddler was murdered in one of the up stairs rooms many years ago. Guests who stay in the room where he was murdered have heard strange noises. They have had their covers whisked away in the middle of the night.

Watkins Slave Cemetery

Anne Arundel County, Maryland
Part of: Locust Grove Plantation

BRIEF: Watkins Slave Cemetery historical signpost

SUMMARY: At this site, anonymously buried slaves were found during road construction in 1960.

Smith House

BRIEF: The ghost upstairs.

SUMMARY: The Smiths lived in a house that was built in 1837. After moving in they began to hear muffled voices coming from the walls. They could not figure this out. Their son was one year old and took naps every afternoon; every afternoon at 2:00 the wife would hear the baby crying. When she would go to check, the baby was always asleep.

Suicide Bridge

BRIEF: Numerous suicides have given this old wooden bridge its dark name

SUMMARY: Suicide Bridge is located in Secretary. This bridge has been for years a place were people have committed suicide. The first victim at Suicide Bridge was the postmaster from Hurlock. The man shot himself and he then fell into the water of Cabin Creek. The second victim was a farmer from the area who also shot himself and fell into the swirling waters of the Dorchester County creek. The next victim was a man who, people say, dove off the bridge; his nickname was "Frog", and he was a black, short and stocky man. The original wooden bridge was built in 1888. A wooden, one-lane replacement was built in 1910. The current bridge was built in 1967 and is made of wood with an asphalt roadway. Townsfolk have named the bridge Suicide Bridge, as it seems to be a magnet for personal tragedy.

Thirteen Bends

BRIEF: An orphanage at this location during the early 1900's, it is said, burned down along with all the children inside.

SUMMARY: An orphanage at this location during the early 1900's, it is said, burned down along with all the children inside.

House on Tilton Court

BRIEF: A haunting that was bothering a baby

SUMMARY: The family living in a house on Tilton Court contacted MGSA because they were having problems with a haunting that was bothering their baby. I went to the house to investigate, and I learned that they were having problems with their doors opening and unlocking by themselves.

Erie County Home and Infirmary

BRIEF: Lights and a figure haunt the vacant upstairs

SUMMARY: The third floor of this almshouse is known to be haunted. The workers there have heard noises upstairs even when the building is vacant. People have seen a ghostly man standing looking out of an upstairs window. Lights have been seen on even without electricity on the floor.

National Veterinary College (site of)

Northwest, District of Columbia
FKA: Veterinary Departments
AFKA: George Washington University College of Veterinary Medicine

BRIEF: Built to train the federal meat inspectors

SUMMARY: In 1896 the NVC became a part of Columbian University (renamed George Washington University in 1904). The college suspended operations in 1898, resumed them in 1908, and then ceased operating altogether in 1918, after the Secretary of Agriculture forbade federal veterinarians from teaching at either of the two District of Columbia veterinary schools.

Plum Orchard Lake

BRIEF: Isabelle, seeking husband

SUMMARY: The lake is haunted by a ghostly woman who is seen walking on the beach at night. She is looking for her husband who drowned in the lake in 1936. Her name is reportedly Isabelle.

Mallows Bay

BRIEF: 200+ wrecked vessels and some ghostly crew.

SUMMARY: Arguably one of the most treacherous points for navigation is where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay. More than two hundred shipwrecks sit on the bottom of Mallow's Bay. Some are partially exposed in the shallow waters. To get to Mallows Bay, you can take a boat down the Potomac River, and travel thirty miles south of Washington, D.C. As you round the bend at Sandy Point, you will be entering Mallows Bay. Mallows Bay is a ghostly region where the remains of many shipwrecks rest. An extremely jagged and precipitous bottom couples with capriciously wild tides at this tidewater confluence where the Potomac River empties into the saltier Chesapeake Bay. A historical maritime survey and evaluation was started by a grant from the State of Maryland. They did an evaluation of the historical maritime artifacts existing in Mallows Bay.

Civil War in Mt. Airy

BRIEF: A small battle in the Mt. Airy woods leaves lasting scars

SUMMARY: Maryland officially sided with the Union [and was the only state ever to be under Marshall Law, per Lincoln], but Mount Airy's general feelings were with the south.

Rose Hill Manor

Frederick County, Maryland
Part of: Rose Hill Manor Park & Children's Museum

BRIEF: Historic Manor House with phantom dog

SUMMARY: The house is reportedly haunted by many ghosts. A wealthy man and his dog lived in the house at one time. The man and his dog's spirit are still at the house. The house was built in 1790 by Major John Colin Graham. The house was once owned by the first Governor of Maryland, Thomas Johnson. The house is reportedly haunted by many ghosts. A wealthy man and his dog lived in the house at one time. The man and his dog's spirit are still at the house. The man buried his money in the ground close to an oak tree. He gave directions in his will but no one could find his money. People believe that if you follow the ghostly dog you will find the man's treasure. The house is now a museum and provides tours and programs to help children understand life two hundred years ago.

Cardinal Gibbons School

Baltimore City, Maryland
FKA: St. Mary's Industrial School

BRIEF: The building was once the St. Mary's Industrial School, which Babe Ruth attended when he was a child.

SUMMARY: The building was once the St. Mary's Industrial School, which Babe Ruth attended when he was a child. Teachers have reported seeing his ghost in the building. The school's Athletic Director has had strange things happen to him in the building. He was in the basement of the gym late one when he heard a ball bouncing upstairs. When he got upstairs he found all the lights were on but no one was in the building.

Old Georgetown Rd.

BRIEF: Several hauntings reported all along this road

SUMMARY: People have reported seeing disturbing sightings of ghostly beings on the road.

Greens at Dover

BRIEF: Long past winter, but still enjoying the greens

SUMMARY: This golf course is haunted by the spirit of an angry Judge. He has been seen walking among the nearby tombstones and on the Green.

Randalls Tavern

BRIEF: Conscription and hauntings.

SUMMARY: Christopher Randall settled in Anne Arundel County in the year 1679. He purchased 1,000 acres on three tracts of land. He named the land tracts Randall's Fancy, Randall's Purchase, and Randall's Range. He also purchased land named Soldiers' Delight.

Longfellow Middle School

BRIEF: A principal who died during classes reportedly now haunts this school

SUMMARY: This school's principal died from heart attack in the 1960's while at school. Custodians have reported seeing his ghostly apparition after hours. Some teachers have also reportedly seen him during the day, though this information is rather suppressed. The apparition is sometimes seen walking through the school, apparently going about normal activities.

Jennie Wade House

Adams County, Pennsylvania
Part of: Gettysburg

BRIEF: The ghost of a civilian killed during the battle of Gettysburg is said to haunt this house

SUMMARY: Mary Virginia (Jennie) Wade was the only civilian casualty during the battle of Gettysburg. She was killed by a stray bullet in her sister's home while making bread for Union soldiers.

Route 40 East

BRIEF: Devilish, with the blue dress on.

SUMMARY: Every city has their own "hitchhiking ghost," and Baltimore has it own story. Baltimore's ghost story is unique because of the way its hitchhiking ghost is dressed: a beautiful blonde woman wearing a blue sequin cocktail dress. She is known to haunt Route 40 East and has been seen hitchhiking there by several people.

"Surveys, such as the one conducted in 1996 by Gallup of a nationally representative sample of Americans, continue to show a high degree of belief, interest and involvement in a variety of paranormal and religious related phenomena among the general population. For example, 48 percent believed in the possibility of extra-sensory perception (ESP), 45 percent believe that unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have already visited Earth, and 56 and 72 per cent believed in the reality of the devil and angels, respectively (Gallup, 1997). In fact, these numbers have actually gone up since the surveys first started (Gallup and Newport, 1991) and other surveys amongst university and college students have yielded similar results (e.g. Messer and Griggs, 1989). Perhaps due to the widespread existence of such beliefs, the investigation of personality correlates of paranormal and particularly religious belief has received considerable attention in recent years, but little attention was given to both simultaneously." --Chris Huntley, 2005 Ph.D. thesis, Correlation of Paranormal Beliefs, Religious Beliefs and Personality
