SUMMARY: The area where the Supreme Court is located actually had a sordid history long before the nation's highest court took residence there. The corner where the Supreme Court is located was once the site of the Old Capitol Building: large, brick, and haunted. It was used temporarily to house employees of the Capitol during repair of fire damage inflicted in the War of 1812.

SUMMARY: It is said that back in the 1880's a maintenance worker killed all of the residents on the fourth floor and hid the bodies in the attic. Some have claimed since that it is possible to sometimes hear those former residents roaming the grounds around the surrounding village of Granville, moaning and searching for families that once lived there.

SUMMARY: Blackbeard's ghost has been seen in the Cape Henlopen area. It was known that he had hidden buried treasure in this area. People believe that his ghost has come back to search for or protect his lost loot. He is seen along Black Bird Creek at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. His ship sank and is located at the bottom of the creek.

SUMMARY: People have experienced feelings of dread, fear, and have felt chills while in Blue Rock Springs Park.

SUMMARY: Many men jumped to their deaths. It is said that these poor souls continue to haunt the hotel. The hotel has rooms that strange occurences to the point that several rooms are now closed to the public.

SUMMARY: Berwyn Elementary School (at the corner of Berwyn and Richardson) gave way in the 1960's to what is now called the Berwyn Senior Center. One catch: a janitor hung himself in the school, the spot where the senior center library now stands.

SUMMARY: Maryland played a critical part in the Civil War. Maryland basically surrounds Washington, DC, and if Maryland had chosen to fight on the Confederate side it would have been a major threat to the nation's capital. So its choice was made for it under Martial Law, the only such time this has occurred in the US.

SUMMARY: The original part of the house was built in 1743 and an addition was added in 1825. The house has a history that goes back to the War of 1812. The British Warship H.M.S. Menelause under command of Sir Peter Parker came ashore through Kent County. Peter was seriously wounded and taken to the Mitchell House and he died in the kitchen. The Col Phillip Reed Room also known as room #4 has a rocking chair in the room. The employees of the inn have seen this rocking chair rocking back and forth with no one in the chair. One of the owners had a dog that liked to play in that room and he also acted like he was playing with someone. The family's cat would not enter this room. Guests who have sat in the rocking chair have felt something touch their leg. Funny noises can be heard through out the house. The basement gives you a bad feeling. This is a place where slaves were kept in chains.

SUMMARY: Taken from A walking Tour of Berkeley Springs Lots 1 and 2 of the original town plat were set aside by the trustees in 1777 for a German church and two other houses. There is no indication that any structures were built. It was variously known as the Dutch, German or Lutheran Cemetery. The body of Doctor Samuel Crawford, victim of a postwar lynching in 1876, was buried there. In 1888, two men reported seeing the ghost of Crawford standing over his grave in the old Dutch graveyard. There was a move in 1917 to move the few bodies interred here to Greenway Cemetery so the land could be available for development. No action was taken. Gravestones have been restored in recent years.

SUMMARY: The town is known to be haunted by three ghosts. One of the ghostly apparitions is a depressed looking man. He is known to walk through downtown late at night. Another ghost is known to haunt "lover's lane," outside of town. The third ghost is an apparently suicidal man who drowned himself on the beach. Bowers Beach is at the end of Highway 1, southeast of Dover.

SUMMARY: The Landon House was built in 1745. The house served as the headquarters for J.E.B Stuart during the Civil War. Stuart troops had a dog as their troop mascot. After the Antietam battle the house was used as a hospital for the Union and Confederate soldiers. Soldiers often took dogs to battle with them. Many soldiers were wounded and killed in the massive battle at Antietam. One of the dogs was wounded in battle and he was taken to the Landon House after the battle. The dog died. The ghostly dog has been seen in the house. Some Civil war re-actors came to visit the house and photographed the ghostly dog and its keeper looking out of the window.

SUMMARY: Possibly posthumously protesting the superbly unnatural large road through their territory, these are activists of another era.

SUMMARY: There is an old church in old St. Mary's City that is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a black female slave. People have gotten pictures of the ghostly apparition. The picture shows a transparent black woman wearing a long dark skirt and a headwrap.

SUMMARY: A young girl was raped and murdered on Bottom Road. Her ghost is known to be very willing to make contact, either through sounds and feelings or occasionally through full-fledged apparitions.
