Haunts Database
BRIEF: One of the most haunted cities on the East Coast. BRIEF: Haines Point area sports several apparitions SUMMARY: Near Haines Point, this building is located next to where the Lincoln assassination conspirators were hung and is reportedly very haunted. BRIEF: Creepiness in the house. SUMMARY: Foul play leaves behind a chatty poltergeist. BRIEF: Dozens of glowing crosses SUMMARY: Cemetery and surrounding woods up on the hill are believed to be haunted. Many dozens of crosses, if seen from afar, appear eerily illuminated. It is said that local witches hold their Sabbaths up on this hill. BRIEF: Someone jabbed a pencil in his eye SUMMARY: The building is haunted by one of the former Brothers of the Sacred Heart. (The brothers still run the high school.) This man, Reginald, died and was buried nearby. The students hated the man, however, and one of them stuck a pencil in his eye at his funeral! His ghost has been seen walking into the rooms on the 4th floor. BRIEF: A ghostly presence in this old home SUMMARY: The house has been renovated and upgraded over the years. The history of the house includes several stories of a ghostly apparition. Annie was the first daughter of the Catons, and she died in the house when she was young. People have seen a young girl standing on the grand staircase. The girl appears on the stairs dressed in a long white dress and white bonnet. She does not scare anyone because she does not appear frightening. People believe the ghost is Annie, because she died in the house. BRIEF: Serving several needs over its long history SUMMARY: Columbia Hospital for Women, which closed in May 2002, was one of the oldest hospitals in Washington, DC and had occupied this site since 1870. Shortly after the Civil War, the Secretary of War E. N. Stanton authorized funds to establish a 50-bed hospital, stipulating that 20 of these beds be reserved for the wives and widows of U.S. soldiers. This was in response to a desperate need for a health-care facility for women who were arriving in the city in search of missing relatives. BRIEF: Devilish duo, buried facing downwards. SUMMARY: They say a long time ago there was a witch and a warlock buried in the church cemetery, and their tombs are "turned upside down," meaning the pair are buried facing downwards into the earth. They say if you go up there late at night you will see glowing lights in the woods and hear strange noises. Accounts of sightings there span the years.
