"Death is the great Teacher, stern, cold, inexorable, irresistible; whom the collected might of the world cannot stay or ward off. The breath, that parting from the lips of King or beggar, scarcely stirs the hushed air, cannot be bought, or brought back for a moment, with the wealth of Empires. What a lesson is this, teaching our frailty and feebleness, and an Infinite Power beyond us! It is a fearful lesson, that never becomes familiar. It walks through the earth in dread mystery, and lays it hands upon all. It is a universal lesson, that is read everywhere and by all men. Its message comes every year and every day. The past years are crowded with its sad and solemn mementoes; and death's finger traces its handwriting upon the walls of every human habitation." --Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma

BRIEF: An old dirt road, 2 older graveyards SUMMARY: An old dirt road, 2 older graveyards BRIEF: Another old mansion that played a role in the Civil War SUMMARY: Arcadia Mansion is significant for its role in the Civil War. Because of General Lee's invasion of Maryland prior to the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam, Colonel Pendleton stayed at Arcadia after his journey from Leesburg and bivouacked his artillery along Ballenger Creek. BRIEF: The spirits of some of those imprisoned here still remain SUMMARY: Eastern State was born in 1829 with the opening of it's doors to prisoners bound for the newly legislated solitary confinement. A concept that took nearly 3 decades to bring into action, this new method of punishment for law breakers was intended as a way to greatly encourage introspection, regret and penance (thus 'penitentiary'). Famous residents include Al Capone & Willie Sutton who, with a dozen men died attempting to tunnel out of the prison. As one might guess, some of the spirits of those imprisoned here have remained. BRIEF: Neat history. SUMMARY: The Hessian Barracks was built in 1777 at this location by Abraham Faw. The building was used to imprison troops who were stationed in Frederick during the Revolutionary War. It was used as a prison for the Hessian soldiers captured at the battles of Bennington, Saratoga, and Yorktown. It also housed mercenaries of England who were captured in Bennington and Saratoga. The Prisoners were released in 1783 and in 1803.
