BRIEF: Crazy ghosts. SUMMARY: George Patterson inherited one 3,000-acre Springfield estate in 1824. He managed a successful farm and raised Devon cattle, the first such herd in the United States.
Frank Brown, a former Governor of Maryland, purchased the Springfield estate from his cousin Florence Patterson Carroll in 1896. He sold almost 1,000 acres to the state of Maryland for use as a hospital for the mentally ill. This hospital became the Springfield Hospital Center. BRIEF: Home of The Raven SUMMARY: The tavern has be remodeled several times. During the 1800s slaves were traded on the porch. Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem "The Raven" at this tavern. BRIEF: Many locals have seen the light, which appears to be searching for someone or something SUMMARY: This light, often reported near Moorefield, West Virginia appears on the Cole Mountain, part of the Appalachians. People have reported seeing the orange and red light in the embankment of Cole Mountain for over 100 years, since the mid 1800's. The local residents are baffled at what the light could be. The lights are called "Spook Light."
The light has seen by hundreds of people over decades. People say that the light will bob up and down the mountainside. No one has ever gotten close to the light; it moves away as approached. The light can be seen best from a road at the base of the mountain.
Many people from the area have had strange encounters with the light. One time several hunters were chased down the mountain by the light. The light scared away their dogs, and strange noises frightened the hunters. BRIEF: Sightings of a "witch ghost" in the cemetery; puts flowers on childrens' graves. SUMMARY: Sightings have been reported of a "witch ghost" who, late at night, glides through the cemetery putting flowers on childrens' graves. |
