Haunts Database
BRIEF: Death and drowning... SUMMARY: The Loy's Station covered bridge was built around 1860 by the Loy family. The family owned the feed mill and post office at Loy's Station, which was a small community with a railroad station.
The original bridge was modified in 1929. New steel beams were installed to replace the original wooden beams and the lateral bracing under the wooden floor. The bridge was destroyed by arson in 1991. Volunteers restored the bridge using timbers salvaged from the old bridge.
During the Civil War the Union and Confederate Armies marched through Frederick and Thurmont on their way to Gettysburg and Antietam. Many small skirmishes took place around Frederick and Thurmont. The soldiers often camped near covered bridges for protective cover and usually water for their horses.
The covered bridges are reportedly haunted by the soldiers who died there and by people that drowned in the water below.
The bridge is located on Old Frederick Road, in Creagerstown. BRIEF: Haunts with roots in the earliest colonial times. SUMMARY: Portland Manor is a mansion house located in Lothian. The land that it sits on is part of 2,000 acres that was granted by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The land was given to Jerome White in 1667. The mansion house was built in 1754 and, the manor house now sits on five acres of land. BRIEF: Near an old railroad tunnel having seven large steps leading up to its top, it is said that a boy once riding his bike there was hit by the train. BRIEF: Howard Chapel Rd bridge over the Patuxent River SUMMARY: There is a family cemetery located 1/4 from the bridge along Howard Chapel Rd at Elton Farm Rd. Used between 1892-1939, about 18 grave sites are there. By the dates on the tombstones, there are lots of young people burried there. I have heard by several people that have seen things near the bridge down the road. There are no houses around & very little traffic. I was there last night doing a training drill & had a feeling of being watched the whole time. It's very very dark there at night. There is a parking area next to the bridge. BRIEF: The mansion near the church SUMMARY: The Westover Mansion was built in 1730 by William Byrd II, the founder of Richmond.
The east wing of the Mansion was added much later in the early 1900's. The Icehouse is located east of the house. The icehouse contains a dry well with passageways that led under the house and to the river. This tunnel was sometimes used to hide or escape from the Indians. |
