"Death is the great Teacher, stern, cold, inexorable, irresistible; whom the collected might of the world cannot stay or ward off. The breath, that parting from the lips of King or beggar, scarcely stirs the hushed air, cannot be bought, or brought back for a moment, with the wealth of Empires. What a lesson is this, teaching our frailty and feebleness, and an Infinite Power beyond us! It is a fearful lesson, that never becomes familiar. It walks through the earth in dread mystery, and lays it hands upon all. It is a universal lesson, that is read everywhere and by all men. Its message comes every year and every day. The past years are crowded with its sad and solemn mementoes; and death's finger traces its handwriting upon the walls of every human habitation." --Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma

Haunts Database

Colby Mansion

BRIEF: Things that go boom in the night

SUMMARY: The Colby Mansion house is boarded and abandoned. It was built in the 1800's by a wealthy railroad man. A bout of depression reportedly struck this well-to-do man, and, unfortunately, he shot and killed his wife. He promptly cut off her head, the story goes, and placed it on the fireplace mantle. Soon thereafter, and the story gets murky here, he was killed by local the local sheriff. Both bodies are buried in the estate's graveyard.

Caldwell Hall

Northeast, District of Columbia
Part of: Catholic University of America
SUMMARY: Caldwell Hall, a dorm centrally located at Catholic University and housing up to 40 males, is one of the oldest buildings on campus. The stone building easily gives "the creeps": Sounds of creaking floors throughout and footsteps in the hallway. It seems to be occupied, even during the sparseness of holidays. There is a small locked room located on the top floor. The light is always on in that room, visible from outside. It is believed that the journal of the priest who performed the exorcism for a possessed boy [inspiration for The Exorcist film] is kept in the room.

Montrose School for Girls

Reisterstown, MD, Baltimore County, Maryland

BRIEF: Former school for delinquent girls now National Guard post

SUMMARY: Originally the estate of Napoleon's Nephew, then the State of Maryland Montrose School for Girls (A school for delinquent girls) until 1988, now a National Guard facility. Activity connected to both the original owners and the Montrose School for Girls.

"When you get old, the only things you remember are the things you dared to do and the things you didn't dare to do. All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." --P.J.
