The town has suffered floods and fires all throughout its existence.
Ellicott City has endured a number of fires through the years. A six-alarm fire happened in 1984. An arsonists blaze occurred in 1992. The most recent fire, on November 9, 1999, destroyed five businesses on Main Street. The fire started in a restaurant called Main Street Blues.
