Psy-ops "combined to redefine the parameters of acceptable discourse in America. Principal among the notions placed beyond the Pale was the practice and theory of "conspiracism" -- which soon came to include criticism of mainstream reportage. More than a matter of seeing cabals behind every murder, it was a way of thinking, a stance toward the networks, the press and the feds. Anyone who looked too deeply into events, or who asked too many questions, was dismissed as "a conspiracy theorist." (This, after MK-ULTRA, Iran-Contra, BCCI, and the destruction of the World Trade Centers.) In some ways, it is as if the century itself has been encrypted, so that if an historian would be honest, he must also become an investigative reporter. Failing that, we are left at the mercy of ambitious academicians and journalists, stenographers to power who are themselves complicit in an astonishing string of cover-ups and atrocities that stretch from Dealy Plaza to Watergate, Waco to 9/11." --Peter Levenda
Haunts Database
BRIEF: Serving several needs over its long history SUMMARY: Columbia Hospital for Women, which closed in May 2002, was one of the oldest hospitals in Washington, DC and had occupied this site since 1870. Shortly after the Civil War, the Secretary of War E. N. Stanton authorized funds to establish a 50-bed hospital, stipulating that 20 of these beds be reserved for the wives and widows of U.S. soldiers. This was in response to a desperate need for a health-care facility for women who were arriving in the city in search of missing relatives. BRIEF: Positively presidential SUMMARY: Heads of state owned this mansion on the Potomac. BRIEF: Possibly the scariest place on earth, but probably not why you'd think. SUMMARY: An abandoned tuberculosis hospital. Unbelievably spooky.
The Government now owns the hospital, and it is condemned property: Carcinogenic asbestos and probably a deadly biological hazard. A police trailer is parked on the land; numerous people have been arrested and/or ticketed.
The original site had 22 buildings, most of which are still standing, including a preposterously huge, 700-room main hospital and a half-sized children's building.
Reports of underground tunnels and cops with night vision goggles.
There is a nice hiking trail located next to the hospital. Some people like to walk on the hiking trails and then cross over to the hospital. Glenn Dale has dark, underground tunnels that run between the buildings. The buildings are reportedly haunted. They are positively spooky. BRIEF: Casualties of Maryland's Gold Rush SUMMARY: Many areas of the United States experienced a "gold rush," but most Marylanders do not know that Maryland had its own, including attendant tragedies. Montgomery County was known for gold mining in the 19th Century. A 100-foot shaft was dug near the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Falls Road around 1867. This mine became the largest and most successful mine in the county. It operated under several different names over 73 years. Over 200-foot shafts with interconnecting tunnels were uncovered between 1900 and 1917. BRIEF: A strange place for hardship. SUMMARY: Annapolis played a big part of Maryland war efforts during the Revolutionary War. The American Revolutionary war ocurred between the years of 1775 and 1778. Annapolis had a Barracks that was rented for the soldiers' housing by the Union. The soldiers suffered hard times while staying in Annapolis, however. There was a shortage of food, the Barracks had no fuel for heat, and they had little furniture and few blankets: The soldiers sometimes burned the furniture for heat. The Barracks had two main rooms on the first floor and two rooms on the second floor. The basement had a kitchen, and the remains of an old oven are in the wall.
