Adventure • Intrigue

Psy-ops "combined to redefine the parameters of acceptable discourse in America. Principal among the notions placed beyond the Pale was the practice and theory of "conspiracism" -- which soon came to include criticism of mainstream reportage. More than a matter of seeing cabals behind every murder, it was a way of thinking, a stance toward the networks, the press and the feds. Anyone who looked too deeply into events, or who asked too many questions, was dismissed as "a conspiracy theorist." (This, after MK-ULTRA, Iran-Contra, BCCI, and the destruction of the World Trade Centers.) In some ways, it is as if the century itself has been encrypted, so that if an historian would be honest, he must also become an investigative reporter. Failing that, we are left at the mercy of ambitious academicians and journalists, stenographers to power who are themselves complicit in an astonishing string of cover-ups and atrocities that stretch from Dealy Plaza to Watergate, Waco to 9/11." --Peter Levenda

Haunts Database

White's Ferry

Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland
Part of: C&O Canal mile 35.5
FKA: Conrad's Ferry

BRIEF: The only operating cabled ferry across the Potomac River

SUMMARY: There were once dozens, maybe hundreds, of ferries that crossed the Potomac River. This is the only one still operating.

Port Costa School

BRIEF: An old school

SUMMARY: This former school, listed as an historical landmark and having a colorful though reportedly errorneous e-history, is being actively restored.

Peg Alley's Point

BRIEF: A wooded area, site of a murder is haunted by the unfortunate victim

SUMMARY: Peg Alley's Point is a long and narrow strip of wooded land, situated between the main stream of Miles river and Hunting creek which flow into it. This little peninsula is about two miles long, from fifty to three hundred yards in width and is bounded by deep water and is overgrown with pine and thick underbrush. A Baltimore oysterman once cruelly murdered his wife in this area, and her spirit has remained here ever since. This area, once a complete peninsula, is now separated by a shallow course of water, thus making this site a small island.

Washington National Cathedral

BRIEF: Over eighty years in the making

SUMMARY: Located at Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenue, NW, The Washington National Cathedral is a magnificent and stunning structure. The foundation stone was laid in 1907 but the work was not completed until September 29, 1990, 83 years later. A lot can happen in that time.

"When you get old, the only things you remember are the things you dared to do and the things you didn't dare to do. All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." --P.J.
