BRIEF: Gathering places often remain focal points; this one is no different SUMMARY: The General Assembly of Maryland in 1742 passed an act for erecting a town on the South Side of the Eastern Branch of the Potowmack River. The town that they started was called Blandensburg, named after Thomas Bladen. He was the provincial governor in 1742. BRIEF: A housekeeping ghost. SUMMARY: The Weaver-Fox House was built in 1874-75. The Clayton family moved into the Weaver-Fox house and soon discovered that they were not alone. After only a few weeks, they decided to take a trip. In preparation, they went through the house locking windows and closing all the doors to the rooms. When the couple returned home they were surprised to find all the doors open in every room. They found a pile of unused towels laying on their bed. They could not figure it out and decided to just let the matter go. BRIEF: A critical role in the Civil War SUMMARY: Maryland played a critical part in the Civil War. Maryland basically surrounds Washington, DC, and if Maryland had chosen to fight on the Confederate side it would have been a major threat to the nation's capital. So its choice was made for it under Martial Law, the only such time this has occurred in the US.
