Workers would find their tools disappearing and showing up in strange places. They would put in a window and would find it broken a few minutes later while they were still working -- something was cracking the glass. General McCellan's Federal Troops took over Berkeley plantation during the Civil War during a retreat from Richmond. John Jamieson purchased the plantation after the war. Jamieson had served as a drummer boy for McCellan. His son Malcolm inherited the estate in 1927.
