"We wish to pursue Truth no matter where it leads. But, to find Truth we need imagination and skepticism, both. We will not be afraid to speculate, but we will be careful to distinguish speculation from fact." --Carl Sagan

Weinberg Center

Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland
FKA: Tivoli Theatre

BRIEF: Old theatre with several hauntings.

SUMMARY: The Weinberg Center opened just before Christmas, 1926. The theater had 1,500 seats. The Tivoli Theatre was the largest of the three downtown Frederick movie houses. It cost over $300,000 to build, a fantastic sum in its time. The Tivoli featured lavish decoration with marble, mosaics, velvet chairs, and crystal chandeliers. The theater had a Wurlitzer organ. It is the only one in that is still completely intact and in it original shape. The architect for the Tivoli was John J. Zink. He was a native of Baltimore. The theater business of course steadily declined, and the Tivoli finally closed. A disastrous flood in 1976 from a nearby river caused substantial damage. The town decided to restore the grand old theater to its original glory. It took a year and a half to restore the building, but the rebuilt Tivoli reopened in 1978, now known as the Weinberg Center for the Arts, having been named for the family that donated the building to the city of Frederick. The old theater is thought to be haunted by spirits who worked in the old theater in its past.

Patapsco Guard

BRIEF: Soldiers still on an important mission

SUMMARY: The Patapsco Guard was a group of Maryland volunteers who organized in 1861 to guard the B&O Railroad during the Civil War. Maryland, being a "flip-flop" state, had supporters on both sides, and hence the B&O transported goods for both sides of the conflict. The PG was a Federal Unit assigned to the Provost Martial, charged with safeguarding the railroads from attack or sabotage. The Patapsco Guard was of course quite active during the Civil War.
